of
the unspoiled Bali. 8:30
a.m. We drive to the sacred forest of towering nutmeg trees
of Alas Kedaton, home of hundreds of monkeys. Group
of large "flying fox" fruit bats hangs from the branches high
above. An old temple is found here. We then proceed to Pura
Luhur, a temple perched halfway up the slopes of the towering,
2,400 meters high, Mt. Batukaru: an unusual complex
of shrines, with a pool, set in the midst of a lush, tropical
forest. We continue to Jatiluwih (which means "supreme
beauty of nature") overlooking a shimmering view of terraced
rice fields, stretching in endless contours over hills and
valleys. We will walk for about an hour in this inspiring
and peaceful setting. We then drive to Pacung, which
commands a splendid view, for a late lunch. On our way back,
we stop in Mengwi to visit the Royal Family Temple
of Taman Ayun, one of Bali's most beautiful temples.
